Why not begin by choosing a chart, diagram, or app?

First choose the mental job. Then search FRAME.

A form is useful only relative to a question. MAP searches five places a representation can change: Focus, Relations, Angle, Medium, and Effect. The visible artifact is only one part of the representation.

What form preserves lived order and meaning?

Use a story when sequence changes interpretation.

Narrative can preserve motives, turning points, and context that a table flattens. Numbered steps or a timeline reduce the memory work required to reconstruct what happened first.

What form remembers the state of unfinished work?

Use a checklist when forgetting—not understanding—is the risk.

A checklist converts recall into recognition. You no longer have to rehearse every unfinished item; the artifact preserves the current state and makes omissions visible.

What form makes repeated comparison cheap?

Align like with like.

In prose, you must remember Tool A’s cost while searching for Tool B’s cost. A table places the same attribute in the same location for every option.

In a table, cells store values. In a quadrant, position shows the values: farther right can mean more expensive; higher can mean more freedom. Tables align values. Quadrants turn values into positions.

What if the exact numbers matter less than the pattern?

Map quantity to visible length or position.

A chart lets perception do ranking and pattern detection. In a bar chart, a larger value becomes a longer mark, so the ordering can be seen before every label is read.

How do you see change, duration, and delay?

Put time on an axis.

A line chart shows a value changing. A timeline shows events and durations. Both make temporal relations visible instead of leaving them buried in dates or paragraphs.

What can one average hide?

Show the cases, not only the center.

Two groups can share the same average while one is tightly clustered and the other contains radically different experiences. Distribution and relationship charts preserve that variation.

Use a tree when the main relation is parent to child.

A tree turns a flat pile into levels: whole, category, subcategory, item. It is useful when each child has one primary parent and the hierarchy itself matters.

Draw the links, not merely the items.

A network treats the relationship as first-class information. Once roads, dependencies, or communication links become edges, clusters, bridges, and single points of failure become visible.

What if an outcome returns and changes its own cause?

Make the mechanism—and the return path—visible.

A causal diagram claims that changing one variable changes another. A feedback diagram goes further: a later consequence returns to amplify or damp the earlier process.

How can position itself carry the argument?

Place options inside a meaningful space.

Maps, quadrants, continua, feasible regions, and set diagrams make distance, overlap, tradeoff, or boundary visible. The axes and regions must have real meaning—not decorative placement.

The cutoffs are your choices, not laws of nature. Two trips just either side of a line can still be very similar. Neither view tells you which trip you will enjoy most.

How do you make a relationship transformable and reusable?

Turn the stable structure into symbols or rules.

An equation separates variables from particular values. Logic exposes allowed conclusions. A schema defines legal structure. An algorithm or code turns a procedure into something executable.

Use the hands to expose a pattern.

Should one problem use several forms?

Keep a small portfolio only when each view earns its place.

A chart may reveal a pattern while a table preserves exact values. A causal graph may need an evidence table. The second form should add an operation the first cannot perform—not repeat the same content decoratively.

Is every thinking problem a representation problem?

No. MAP is one door inside MODELS.

MODELS is a router: MAP, OPTIONS, DESTINATION, EVIDENCE, LOOP, and SYSTEM are six different places cognition can fail. This field guide lives mainly under MAP. More diagrams cannot fix a missing option, undefined goal, missing observation, recurring process, or misplaced responsibility.
